New interior design and architectural trends in Marbella

The past decade was all about a return to modern, cubic, minimalist house designs marked by right-angled, white-plastered walls, large windows and sparse furnishing in muted tones. Towards the end of the decade, brighter colours started to re-appear in Marbella, along with a retro to earthier, more natural materials and retro-modern influences.

Suddenly, we saw a return of wood, combined with steel and concrete to create a more urban/industrial look and feel, and this merged with the notable influence of Scandinavian design, particularly on the Costa del Sol, where they showed us how sleek minimalism can also be warm, natural and welcoming.

Others started experimenting with 1940s and 1950s inspired furniture, tendencies that were also visible in many leading furniture and décor collections available here on the coast, and along with richly patterned wallpaper the scene became all the more joyous and homely, though sleek lacquered finishes in off whites remained a popular choice and combine well with natural materials too.

Space, but well used

With many spending more time at home than ever before, including working remotely, people are asking for sufficient interior living space, open-plan distribution and work spaces, as well as gardens and terraces, ideally close to nature. Even so, it looks like compact living has also taken off, and in Marbella we see this in the form of more space-efficient villas becoming available .

Where homes over 500m2 were once the norm most people buying modern villas now search for something between 200-400m2, and here again open-plan layouts and modern American style kitchens help to use the space more effectively than ever. Separate home cinemas, bars and games rooms have similarly been integrated into one central entertainment area, and then there is the on-going digital development in home automation, security, comfort and leisure amenities, not to mention energy-efficiency and a drive towards greater sustainability in everything from the materials used to the way we enjoy our homes.

So let yourself be inspired, think outside the box and make your Marbella home the place that gives you warmth, pleasure and optimal comfort – and speak to us, as we’ll make your vision a reality.
